Supplies
Fresh oranges
Sharp knife
Cutting board
Baking sheet
Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat
Twine, string, or ribbon
Needle
Hot glue gun (optional, for extra decorations like cinnamon sticks or pinecones)
Directions/Steps
- Start by washing your oranges thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice the oranges into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Try to make the slices as even as possible so they dry evenly. Don't forget to remove any seeds as you slice the oranges.
- Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature setting (around 170°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Arrange the orange slices in a single layer on the sheet, ensuring they don't overlap. This will allow them to dry evenly.
- Place the sheet in the oven and bake the slices for 3 to 4 hours, flipping them every 30 minutes to ensure they dry on both sides. The slices should feel firm and dry but still retain their shape and color. If the edges curl up slightly, that’s perfectly fine—it adds to the rustic charm.
- Once the slices are completely dried, let them cool down before handling. Then, take a needle and thread it with some strong twine or string. Use the needle to carefully pierce each orange slice through the center, creating a hole big enough for the string to pass through.
- String the slices together, spacing them out as much or as little as you like. If you want to add extra elements like cinnamon sticks or small sprigs of greenery, alternate them with the orange slices to add variety and texture.
- Once your garland is strung to the desired length, tie a knot at each end of the string to prevent the slices from sliding off.
Tips & Tricks
Hang the garland wherever you’d like to enjoy its bright and festive appearance! It looks beautiful draped over a mantel, around a window, on a Christmas tree, or even across a table as a centerpiece. The citrus scent will linger in the air, adding a fresh, natural fragrance to the space.
