Prep Time
30 Mins
Supplies
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup epsom salts
2 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
2 1/2 tbsp water
15 to 20 drop citrus essential oils (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, or a blend)
Witch hazel (or rubbing alcohol) in a spray bottle, for misting
Natural mica powder, turmeric, or food coloring for optional colorant
Bath bomb molds, silicone molds, or even ice cube trays
Gloves (optional, but recommended if you’re using colorant)
Directions/Steps
1. In a large bowl, mix together the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and Epsom salts. Stir them together thoroughly using a whisk or spoon to remove any clumps.
2. If your coconut oil is solid, gently melt it in a microwave-safe bowl or double boiler until it’s liquid.
Add wet ingredients: To the melted coconut oil, add the water and essential oils (about 15-20 drops depending on how strong you want the scent). Stir well to combine.
3. Pour the wet mixture slowly into the dry ingredients, a little bit at a time, while constantly stirring. The key is to avoid activating the fizzing reaction too early, so go slowly. Stir gently, but consistently. If the mixture starts to fizz or bubble, stop adding liquid and wait for it to settle.
4. If you’d like to add color, this is the time! Add a tiny bit of natural colorant, like mica powder (available in many craft stores), or a pinch of turmeric for a yellow hue. Alternatively, you can use a few drops of food coloring, but keep in mind that food coloring may stain the tub if overused. Mix well until the color is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
5. To check if the mixture is the right consistency, grab a small handful of the mixture and squeeze it. If it holds together without crumbling, it’s ready. If it’s too dry, lightly mist the mixture with witch hazel or rubbing alcohol until it sticks together, but avoid getting it too wet.
6. Firmly pack the mixture into your bath bomb molds. If you’re using two-part molds, press them together tightly. Make sure the mixture is packed in firmly to ensure the bath bomb holds its shape. If you’re using a silicone mold, press the mixture in tightly, but you can skip the pressing part for these. Let the bath bombs dry in the mold for about 24 hours (or at least 4-6 hours if you’re in a rush).
7. Once your bath bombs are dry and firm, carefully remove them from the molds. If they’re still a little fragile, let them dry a bit longer before removing.
